About the University

Mizan-Tepi University (MTU) is one of the second-generation universities in Ethiopia that came to exist in 2006. Currently, the university has three campuses and all is found in South West Regional State. MTU’s main campus and its teaching Hospital are located at Bench-Sheko Zone, Mizan-Aman town administration; and its branch campus is at Sheka Zone, Tepi town Administration.

The Teaching Hospital was established in 1986 as Mizan Tefari Hospital; and in November 2016 it was merged with Mizan-Tepi University in intention to produce qualified health professionals and provide better medical care for the community. The university has started teaching-learning by sharing building from Mizan Agriculture, Technical, vocational education and training college (ATVET). By the time, it has admitted only 215 regular undergraduate programme students in faculty of education at Mizan campus. In the past 18 years, MTU has shown a significant progress and has increased the students’ total enrolment to around 20,000 in regular and continuing programme in its fifty-one departments of six colleges and five schools both in 54 undergraduate and 42 post graduates programmes. In its 18 years journey, the university has graduated more than 40,000 students in different fields and programmes of study. As MTU exists at the place where different nations, nationalities and peoples living together; the area best reminds the perfect model of mini-Ethiopia.

The three campuses of MTU are situated at the deep green and unique natural and anthropogenic diversity. The enormous potentialities and gifted natural resources of the south west provide MTU for a huge prospect to project into new grounds of education and research development. As a result, MTU makes great use of its trained professionals and scholars to achieve the country's educational goals
